World Malaria Day commemorates the global effort to control and end deaths from malaria. Occurring on April 25 each year, it provides an opportunity for advocates to raise awareness and generate support for the fight against this disease. In 2011, ExxonMobil participated in a number of activities on World Malaria Day in order to highlight the progress our partners have already made fighting this disease and to recruit more champions for these efforts.

Champions to End Malaria Exhibition
ExxonMobil was a sponsor of a project by the United Nations and Roll Back Malaria to acknowledge the significant progress in the fight against malaria. Jointly, we are hosting a photo exhibition — Champions to End Malaria — at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Featuring portraits by world-renowned photographer Platon, this exhibition highlighted individuals who have leveraged their skills, talent, and platform to raise awareness and resources to save lives from malaria.

Activities in Africa
ExxonMobil participated in key activities across Africa to educate individuals, raise public awareness and help fight the spread of malaria in recognition of World Malaria Day. Working with partners in Africa, these World Malaria Day initiatives include:

  • In Nigeria, partnering with Family Care to promote and publicly broadcast various prevention and treatment tools and resources.
  • In Angola, convening malaria partners for a Malaria Day fair, where representative will provide bed nets and exhibitions, treatment counseling, and educational materials.
  • In Cameroon, participating in a Malaria Day march through the capital city of Yaoundé.
  • In Ghana, working with key partners AMMREN and NetsforLife to distribute 1,000 bed nets, while also training families on how to properly use and maintain them in their home.
