Mitigating operational greenhouse gas emissions

Our strategy to reduce GHG emissions is focused on increasing energy efficiency in the short term; implementing current proven emission-reducing technologies in the near and medium term; and developing breakthrough, game-changing technologies for the long term.

In 2009, our flaring averaged 445 million cubic feet per day, a reduction of about 23 percent from 2008 and a 43-percent improvement from 2005.

We have invested in researching new technologies that have transformative potential for the economy and the environment.

We have interests in about 4900 megawatts of cogeneration capacity in over 100 individual installations at more than 30 locations around the world.

Energy efficiency is one of the largest and lowest cost ways to extend our world’s energy supplies and reduce GHG emissions.

ExxonMobil is a leader in the development and use of component technologies essential for carbon capture and storage (CCS), which we have focused on in our oil and gas operations for many years.

We are working with others to develop next-generation technology for gasification.

ExxonMobil is investing more than $100 million in a test facility to develop a technology to make carbon capture and storage less expensive.
